i should be writing a movie review instead of obsessing with music videos. [11 Nov 2009|11:45pm] elfiepike lady gaga's "bad romance" video. i'm blown away, guys. this video is the shit! it reminds me of the kind of thing i'd be way down for if i saw it in, you know, a museum or something. it also reminds me of all of the LADY GAGA: PUPPET FOR THE ILLUMINATI symbolism-reading that people have done, which: 1. lol! 2. i am in the middle of reading an article about vagina dentata and castration fears as represented by the medusa myth, so i actually do think that ridonk theories like "lady gaga bases her imagery on those of the masons" are certainly possible. i mean, she's a performer with an obviously strong sense of style that goes beyond any attempt to be fashionable; even though i'm generally not sold on conspiracy theories when it comes to the government, i think that it is 100% possible to enrich an entertainment object with symbolism when it comes to the image- and narrative-based cultural products that artists create. it ALSO reminds me the janelle monae "many moons" video, in that they are both about people being controlled by their environments, and bought and sold for the men who watch them, and they both have rich worlds that can be read into them despite being under seven minutes each and ultimately (or at least, in some sense merely) marketing tools. on the other hand--i forget who i was talking to about this, maybe miss_begonia?--lady gaga and janelle monae have such distinctly opposite presentations of the female body, and the narrative arcs of the videos, while potentially similar re: being on display, being bidded on, offering up destruction, are still thematically different in terms of control and public versus private ownership. ooooor something like that, anyway. i love both videos a lot! haha. in a very immediate, gut-reaction kind of way, both videos appeal to my sense of shiny, dance-based aesthetics and costume extravaganzas, but in wildly different ways. what do you guys think? (all of this is as opposed to, say, the newest cobra starship video, which i found problematic and generally poorly made, but mostly just boring.
